How to Heal From Past Wounds Through Christ: A Biblical Framework for Emotional Freedom
If you’re here looking for healing from past wounds, I’ve got you. If your heart is heavy, if your eyes are tired from crying, it’s okay. Take a deep breath; I know you’re probably exhausted. I know exactly how it feels to carry the heavy, invisible weight of yesterday’s heartbreaks. I know how it feels to carry rejections, or trauma, all into today’s responsibilities.
For years, I secretly tried to fix my own brokenness using the ✨glittering✨ tools of the mainstream self-help industry. I tried repeating positive affirmations and even spent some time striving to manifest peace. But it was a hollow well. It took hitting the absolute limits of my own flesh to realize a liberating spiritual truth:
We cannot be our own savior.
True, lasting Christian emotional healing doesn’t happen by looking deeper into ourselves. Such a thing might only result in further pain and slipping deeper into darkness. No, it happens when we stop trying to follow our deceitful hearts (Jeremiah 17:9). When we fully surrender them to Jesus Christ.
The reason you’re struggling isn’t because you haven’t tried hard enough. It’s not that you haven’t had “enough faith.” You’ve read the trending secular wellness books and listened to the self-help podcasts. You’ve filled your journals with bulleted lists of things you are told to appreciate. Even tried your hand at visualizing a more peaceful reality. Yet, when the lights go out and the room falls silent, that familiar undercurrent of anxiety, unworthiness, guilt, or past pain rushes right back to the surface. You find yourself trapped in an exhausting cycle of endless human effort, constantly wondering, “Why am I still hurting?”

I Know How it Feels
I know that exhaustion intimately because I lived it myself. Earlier in my own journey of healing from past wounds, I fell victim to the glittering promises of the secular wellness industry. I’ve checked every box the wellness world told me to check. I repeated positive affirmations to myself every morning and as much as I could throughout the day. I tried to heal my own emotional trauma. But it truly was a hollow well.
It took hitting the absolute limits of my own human strength to realize a sobering spiritual truth: my heart didn’t need to be followed—it needed to be completely surrendered to Jesus Christ. Following my heart only got me hurt further.
If you are a traditional, biblical woman who feels bound by the chains of yesterday, I want you to take a deep breath with me. True, lasting Christian emotional healing doesn’t happen by digging deeper into yourself. It happens when you stop trying to be your own savior and allow the Holy Spirit to do a profound, transformative work of grace within your soul.
The Danger of Secular “Trauma Culture”
We live in a culture that is utterly obsessed with trauma, yet entirely incapable of delivering true redemption. Odd, when you think about it. If you scroll through social media or visit a secular mindset coach today, you get lies. You’ll find an endless sea of content. It constantly encourages you to over-identify with your wounds.
Much to my frustration, the modern wellness movement teaches a dangerous lie. It claims that your trauma is your identity. It says your past experiences excuse current toxic behaviors.
Furthermore, it teaches you to protect yourself at all costs. It encourages you to build walls of cold hyper-vigilance. Sadly, these walls are often mislabeled as “boundaries.”
This framework creates a dangerous spiritual trap. It shifts your focus entirely inward, urging you to rely on your own psychological grit to overcome your pain. It tells you to use the “law of attraction” to manifest a life free of suffering, or to look to a mystical “third eye” to unlock deep inner wisdom.
But as believers, we must ask: where is the cross of Christ in that equation? Where is the Holy Spirit? Because I’m telling you right now, you will NOT overcome it by having “grit.” Ask me how I know. Maybe you don’t have to… maybe you see it in your own life.
But thankfully, when we look to an emotional healing Bible framework, we find a radically different approach to suffering. Scripture doesn’t tell us to deny our pain, nor does it tell us to worship it. Instead, it invites us to bring it to the One who was wounded for our transgressions. Secular self-help leaves you entirely dependent on your own fragile flesh. Christ offers you the unshakeable, supernatural power of His grace. He provides PEACE.
Dismantling the Spiritual Strongholds of Yesterday
To understand how healing trauma through faith actually works, we have to look at the spiritual reality of a wound. When someone sins against us (whether through abandonment, abuse, rejection, deceit, or harsh words) it leaves an emotional laceration. If that laceration is not immediately brought to God for cleansing and healing, the enemy uses it as a spiritual entry point. He’ll widen the wound, dig deeper, and cause even more damage.
In the Greek text of the New Testament, the Apostle Paul uses the word topos in Ephesians 4:27, which translates to “foothold” or “place.” When we harbor unhealed bitterness, we face a hidden danger. Unresolved grief or deep-seated shame does the same thing.
We give the enemy a topos in our minds. A territory. A place.
The enemy uses this ground to build a stronghold. We must reclaim that space through Christ.
The Difference in Coaching Types:
Secular Self-Help:
- Self-Reliance
- “Follow Your Heart”
- Manifesting and Attraction
- Human Willpower
Christian Mindset Coaching:
- Holy Spirit Dependence
- “Surrender Your Heart”
- Taking Thoughts Captive
- Scriptural Authority
A spiritual stronghold is a fortified lie that alters how you perceive reality. For example:
- If you were abandoned by a parent or an ex-spouse, the enemy builds a stronghold that whispers: “Everyone will eventually leave you, so you must never trust anyone fully.” (a personal battle I went through)
- If you were subjected to constant criticism growing up, the stronghold says: “Your worth is entirely dependent on your perfection. If you fail, you are completely unlovable.” (another battle I’ve gone through myself)
Over time, we begin to mistake these strongholds for our actual personality traits. We say things like, “I’ve just always been an anxious person,” or “I’m just naturally guarded and cynical.” And in my coaching practice, my first goal is to help you realize that these patterns are not your true identity in Christ; they are the defensive walls you built in the dark to protect yourself because you didn’t know how to let God be your refuge.

The Three Pillars of Scriptural Restoration
True Christian emotional healing is not a passive event; it is an active, disciplined journey of discipleship and sanctification. While secular mindset work focuses on changing your thoughts to get what you want out of the world, biblical mind renewal focuses on aligning your thoughts with the character of God so you can find peace, no matter your circumstances.
Through my coaching framework, we walk through three distinct scriptural pillars to tear down the strongholds of past trauma (things I did myself that ACTUALLY WORK):
1. Hauling the Hidden Things into the Light
The enemy thrives in secrecy and isolation. When we pack our past pain into the dark closets of our minds, refusing to look at it or talk about it, it rots. It manifests as unexplained irritability, chronic anxiety, and sudden emotional outbursts.
Scripture tells us in Psalm 32:3, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.” The first step of healing is holy honesty. We have to name the wound, identify the lies the enemy attached to that wound, and bring it entirely into the light of Christ’s presence. If that means crying as you address the pain, then cry. In our 1:1 sessions, I provide a completely safe, judgment-free, and confidential space where you can finally stop pretending and speak the raw truth about what you have been carrying.
2. The Supernatural Work of Forgiveness
This is where secular coaching and Christian coaching part ways completely. The secular world tells you to forgive only if it “serves your peace” or to simply cut people off and harbor a cold indifference. But the Bible gives us a non-negotiable command to forgive just as Christ forgave us (Colossians 3:13). And it’s for good reason!
Let me be incredibly clear: forgiveness is not access. Forgiveness does not mean condoning abuse, minimizing sin, or putting yourself back into a harmful situation. Forgiveness is a legal transaction of the soul. It is choosing to release the person who hurt you from the debt they owe you, and handing that debt over to the Righteous Judge.
When you refuse to forgive, you remain chained to your abuser or your past. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the prison cell from the inside. It is an act of supreme trust in God’s justice, and it is a supernatural work that we cannot do without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. And it will change EVERYTHING for the better! (I know it’s scary, please believe me, but it’s important to have faith and trust in what God and what He says He’ll do)
3. Replacing the Trauma Narrative with Christ’s Testimony
When you have operated from a place of unhealed trauma for years, your brain literally builds neural pathways dedicated to self-protection and fear. To experience total freedom, your old narrative must be entirely replaced by the Word of God. It takes time, but it’s absolutely possible, and your wounded heart of stone will be replaced with one of flesh that honors Christ (Ezekiel 36:26).
We don’t do this through vague positive thinking, though. We do this by actively meditating on and enforcing scriptural truth over our memories every single day, and every time they come back up to hurt us. If the enemy brings up a memory of past rejection to make you feel worthless today, we immediately counter it with the truth of Ephesians 1:4—that you were chosen in Christ before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. We replace the broken story of what happened to you with the beautiful reality of what Christ accomplished for you on the cross.
The Role of a Christian Mindset Coach in Your Healing Journey
You might be asking, “If I have the Bible and the Holy Spirit, why do I need a Christian mindset coach?” The answer is found in the biblical model of community and mentorship. God never intended for us to walk out our sanctification in total isolation. In Galatians 6:2, we are commanded to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” I won’t just be “a coach” to you—I’ll be a partner, a friend, and someone to share the weight with.
As your coach, I am not your healer—only Jesus can claim that title. Instead, my role is to act as an objective, spiritually mature partner who walks right beside you in the trenches.
TRADITIONAL COUNSELING vs. CHRISTIAN MINDSET COACHING:
- Traditional Counseling (Focused on the Past): Unpacking the origins, behaviors, and deep dynamics of childhood trauma and past emotional pain.
- Christian Mindset Coaching (Focused on the Future): Taking thoughts captive today to break free from old strongholds and walk boldly into your God-given calling.
While traditional counseling is an excellent tool for processing the historical details of your past, coaching is an action-oriented, forward-focused partnership. Together, we look at how those past wounds are showing up in your present life—in your marriage, your boundaries, your self-talk, and your spiritual intimacy—and we design practical, daily scriptural strategies to help you take your thoughts captive in real-time.
I’ll help you identify your specific emotional triggers, call out the blind spots you can’t see on your own, and hold you lovingly accountable to walking in the freedom Christ has already purchased for you.

Step Out of the Grave and Into Your Calling
In John 11, we read the beautiful story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. When Jesus calls him out of the tomb, Lazarus walks out alive, but he is still completely wrapped from head to toe in his grave clothes. Jesus looks at the people standing nearby and says, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
This is the perfect picture of many Christian women today. Through salvation, you have been given new life in Christ. You are spiritually alive! But as you try to walk out your daily life, you are still bound by the heavy, suffocating grave clothes of your past trauma, your old labels, and your unhealed emotional wounds.
You do not have to live your life wrapped in the garments of the grave. Christ did not endure the cross just to save your soul for eternity while leaving your mind to be tortured by anxiety and shame here on earth. He came that you might have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10).
It is time to take off the grave clothes. It is time to stop letting the enemy use your past to paralyze your future. The traditional, faithful, and dignified woman God called you to be is waiting on the other side of your surrender.
