How Prayer Can Help You Overcome Anxiety (+ Guided Prayer)
I’ve only been wanting to write a post on how prayer can help overcome anxiety for a few days. But when something hits me as suddenly as this idea, I believe it’s because it came from God. He wanted me to write this post for someone in need—maybe that’s you! If it is, and you’ve been feeling anxious and restless lately, I pray this post finds you and helps you.
Let’s say a small prayer before we begin. Don’t worry, this isn’t the guided prayer I mentioned in the title—that prayer is at the end of the post. You can jump to it using the Table of Contents if you’d like to read it now, though.
A Quick Prayer for Anxious Hearts
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come to You today in need of Your comfort and guiding hand. Our hearts feel heavy, our thoughts race, and worry seems to steal our peace throughout the day and into the night. Lord, You know the fears we carry and the uncertainty that fills our minds. Wrap us in Your perfect peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Quiet the noise of anxiety and replace it with the steady truth of Your Word. Remind us that we are never alone—you go before us, walk beside us, and hold us in the palm of Your hand (Deuteronomy 31:8). Help us to trust You with all of our heart when the future feels unclear (Proverbs 3:5-6). Strengthen our faith so that we lean on Your promises instead of our fears. Teach us to breathe deeply, rest in Your presence, and remember that You are greater than anything we face (Isaiah 41:10).
We lay every anxious thought at Your feet today, Lord, believing that You care for us more than we can imagine (Psalm 55:22). Thank You for being our refuge, our healer, and our unshakable hope.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Why Prayer Matters When You’re Anxious
Prayer is more than words; when you’re anxious, it can bring peace to your mind, rest to your soul, and relief to your body. Ask me how I know! Prayer is genuinely my favorite thing to do lately because it provides such a large mood boost. I can feel my heart beating easier (mostly because I don’t feel it beating at all, since it used to pound in my chest or have heart palpitations) after prayer.
Prayer isn’t just good for you emotionally and physically, but it also protects you spiritually. When you pray to remove anxiety from your life, you’re closing one more door that the enemy was using to access you through. You are shutting out access to your mind and heart in another manner, making it harder for him to manipulate you.
Understanding Anxiety from a Biblical Perspective
Philippians 4:6–7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything…”
But how many of us actually obey those words? How can we? It’s hard to live in today’s world and not be anxious about anything, especially when we have things like social media, toxic dating apps, and easier access to the horrible things happening all across the world. So what do we do?
Well, 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him…”
So the Bible acknowledges that we will have anxiety, but instead of worrying about them, it tell us to give them all to God. Not just the big things. Not just the things we think are “worth praying about.” All of it. That knot in your chest when you wake up. That fear of the future you keep shoving down. That racing mind when you’re trying to sleep. God wants it all.
This isn’t about pretending you’re okay or brushing off your feelings—it’s about shifting the weight. You were never meant to carry it.
Practical Tips for Praying Through Anxiety
Pray honestly and specifically.
One thing I’ve learned lately is that specific prayers are 100 times better than your basic “I’m-just-praying-to-say-I-have” prayers. For example, praying “Father, please remove this anxiety from me” can be beneficial, but there is a more powerful way to pray.
You could try, “Father, _______ is causing me a lot of anxiety lately. I pray that you help _______. Please remove the anxiety from me in relation to this issue and allow me to see the good in ________. If there is anything else in my life that is causing me to be anxious, please show it to me so that I may lift it up to you and release my worries at your feet.”
See the difference? Give it a try! Don’t let your anxiety rush your prayers; really take your time and be specific. Lay it all out for God. Yes, He already knows, but you need to be specific in what it is that you’re laying at His feet.
Use Scripture as part of your prayers.
If you’re like me, the idea of using scriptures for anxiety may stress you even more, just for the simple fact that you aren’t great at memorizing them. Listen, girl—I get it. Really, I do! That’s why (as we’ll get to in a moment) I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend a prayer journal. The more you write and read something, the better you’ll be at memorizing it.
Pray consistently, not just in crisis.
We often turn our attention to God most when we are hurting or really going through a tough patch. Then life gets easy (or at least easier) again and we start spending less time in prayer. We think we have nothing to pray about unless we’re needing something to be fixed or provided to us.
But that isn’t the case at all.
Prayer isn’t just a lifeline for when life feels overwhelming or when we desperately need answers. It’s a continuous conversation with God that builds our relationship with Him, just like any friendship grows through regular connection—not only in emergencies.
Keep a prayer journal for anxious thoughts.
I really love my prayer journal. I’m sure if you follow me on Instagram, you’re already aware of this. I do my best to write in it daily, because if I get “too busy” to pray throughout the day, I still remember to talk to God when I journal. As I’ve journaled my prayers and thoughts, I’ve gotten better at consistently talking to God throughout the day (as I’m driving, before I eat, etc.), so “being too busy” hasn’t been an issue as of late.
There’s just something powerful about writing things down. It slows my mind, helps me process my emotions, and gives me a clear space to hear from God. Some of my biggest revelations and breakthroughs have come during quiet moments with my pen and journal.
If you’re interested in purchasing a prayer journal, I will leave the link (along with other relevant items) at the end of this post, but you can also click the bolded keyword in this paragraph if you’d like to just view the journal.
5 Scriptures to Pray When Anxiety Strikes
1. Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
2. Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
3. 1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
4. Psalm 94:19
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
5. John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Replacing Worry with Worship
I’ve been struggling with anxiety again recently, though I’m not sure why sometimes. I’ve had an incident this week with a close friend of mine, and it’s caused my chest to be tight and for me to be short of breath on occasion. I’m praying it will be resolved as God sees fit, and that I will be at peace with how things turn out.
In moments where my heart is anxious, I find it very relaxing to write in my prayer journal about what is weighing on my heart. Whatever it is that makes me uneasy, I write it down. It’s a nice way to vent to the Lord without venting to everyone else—only He can provide true comfort.
Once I write my worries, I fill the rest of the space is praise and worship. I thank God for hearing me, always, and for putting my mind at ease. It is really powerful because by the time I finish writing, I feel so much lighter and my anxiety has ceased.
Worship doesn’t erase the problems we face, but it shifts focus from what we can’t change to the One who can create change. I think part of what causes anxiety is just the thought of not being in control, so focusing on the One who is can really help remove that worry.
Encouragement to Keep Praying Even When It’s Hard
You’ll have days where prayer will be the last thing you think you want to do. Maybe you’ll be tired, emotionally drained, or even angry. Maybe you’ve been praying about something for weeks, months, or even years—and it still feels like nothing is happening.
You may ask, Why should I even bother?
Because, prayer isn’t just about getting the answer you want—it’s about staying connected to the One who already knows what you need. Even in the silence, God is listening! Your consistency in prayer isn’t a sign of perfect faith—it’s a sign of trust. A sign that you believe He’s worth talking to, even when life doesn’t make sense to you.
We need to remember that the things God does in our lives (or doesn’t do) don’t have to make sense to us. We just need to continue trusting Him. If everything He did made sense to us, why would we need faith?
Romans 12:12 reminds us to “be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” That last part—faithful in prayer—isn’t just for the easy days. It’s for the hard ones, too.
Guided Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Right now, I’m feeling overwhelmed and anxious about _____________. My heart is racing, my mind won’t stop spinning, and I feel like I’m drowning in fear. My chest hurts with worry and anxiety.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds me, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
So today, I bring my anxiety to You, Lord. I don’t have all the answers, and sometimes I don’t understand why I feel this way. But I trust that You do. I ask You to calm my restless heart and quiet my racing thoughts. Help me to replace fear with faith, doubt with trust, and to rest in your peace.
Please give me strength to face __________. Help me to remember that I am never alone. Help me remember that You walk with me, even in my darkest moments. Remind me that Your perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18) and that Your presence is my refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1).
When anxiety creeps back in, remind me to turn to You in prayer instead of letting fear take control. Remind me to pull out my prayer journal and write everything down so I may be able to release it easier to You. Teach me to breathe deeply and focus on Your promises, knowing that You hold my future in Your hands.
Thank You for hearing me, for loving me, and for giving me peace that nothing in this world can take away.
I pray all of these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.

This was such a comforting read. I love how you explained prayer not just as a ritual, but as a way to quiet the mind and hand over worries we can’t control. It’s such a powerful reminder that we don’t have to carry everything alone. Thank you for sharing this perspective—it really spoke to me.
Hey there, RLT! I’m extremely grateful this post spoke to you. Anxiety is something I’ve struggled with for a long time, to the point of anxiety attacks and regular heart palpitations. But the truth is, you benefit NOTHING from it! Prayer has helped me overcome anxiety, stress, anger, and so much more, so I’ve been eager to share it’s power with others. Thanks for your comment! <3
